Digital SLR stands for Digital Single Lens Reflex. They are excellent cameras and are said to produce clearer, sharper and more colorful pictures than a regular digital camera. While the Digital SLR is getting more affordable, there is still quite a gap in the prices between a regular compact digital camera and the very basic of the SLR cameras.
While digital cameras are more affordable they don't have the features of the SLR digital camera. You can shoot video and they are extremely portable and you can view the picture on the LCD screen prior to pointing and clicking. So what does the SLR have or do?
The SLR models have come down a lot in price, and their performance has increased every year. They have faster start up times and lag time is nominal. What is lag time? The time between when you pushing the shutter release button and the time the camera actually takes the picture. The lag time varies between models, and this is one of the biggest problems with this camera. These cameras do offer higher sensitivity and less noise, and a better autofocus speed because of the larger sensors they have as opposed to the compact digital camera. They also offer a longer battery life than a digital camera, because of limited use of the LCD screen. The SLR camera has a 2000 shot per charge of the battery, where the regular old digital camera only has about 500, due to viewing the image on the LCD screen. These cameras also have one feature that you cannot get with the normal compact digital, point and click cameras. You can interchange or change out lenses on the SLR digital camera. So if you are photography hobbyist, you might want to check this camera out. A zoom lens or a macro lens might be necessary for certain shots, and you can do that with this camera.
So what are the negatives with the SLR? They are usually larger and weigh more than regular digitals cameras and you cannot view the image prior to taking the shot. Also the SLR doesn't have the feature that allows you to shoot video and if you do want to view the image prior to taking the shot or to add extra lenses, the cost is significant. In order to view the image on the SLR prior to taking the picture you have to buy an LCD screen that attaches to the view finder. The extra lenses sometimes cost more than the original SLR camera itself.
So there are some things to consider, your budget being the first. Check them out in the store or go online. Depending on your use and your hobby, a plain old point and click camera maybe all you need. However, if photography is your gig, you might need a few more features to create those masterpieces. |
